John Mueller stated that Google has no added preference for fresh content over old content. Though he had stated earlier in this week, that Google indexes fresh content pages more often but indexing and ranking are different.
John was asked on Twitter whether Google favors fresh content and his reply was a firm no.
He mentioned that Google crawls the pages that are significant and also made a reference to the crawl budget topic that mentions the staleness factor of how often the pages are crawled. However, crawling is different from a ranking of the pages.
You should keep in mind the exception of QDF (Query Deserves Freshness). There are certain cases where freshness does come into play like weather reports, trending news, relevant topics, and so on.
